Defence is booming in South Australia.
As the high-technology centre of Australia’s defence industry, South Australia is home to the Asia Pacific regional headquarters and operations of some of the world’s leading defence companies.
South Australia leads the way in many defence areas, including:

  • Naval shipbuilding
  • Submarine support
  • Systems integration
  • Electronic warfare
  • Land force enhancement
  • Aerospace intelligence
  • Surveillance and reconnaissance, and
  • Defence research and development.

A major part of the State’s strong economic performance is our successful track record of winning and delivering on major projects, in addition to being the most competitive place to do business in Australia (KPMG 2006).

We’re right on target for billions of dollars worth of defence projects in the next decade, adding to the:

  • $8 billion Air Warfare Destroyer project, including the high-tech AWD Systems Centre
    AP-3C Orion Alliance
  • $1 billion Coastwatch costal surveillance project, and
  • the multi-billion dollar Collins Class submarine through-life-support contract.

Also, Adelaide will soon be home to a mechanised Army Battlegroup of 1200 soldiers, with construction of over $600 million in capital facilities to commence in late 2008.

These projects combined with the state’s three world class defence precincts - Edinburgh Parks, Technology Park Adelaide and Techport Australia - cement South Australia’s position as the Defence State.

Defence SA leads the Government of South Australia’s defence industry efforts. It offers focused and responsive service to Defence and defence industry in supporting the growth of Defence and sustainable defence industries in South Australia.
