Thales Australia is Australia’s leading defence, engineering and systems company, with 3500 employees and an annual revenue around A$1 billion. The company is composed of six business groups: Naval, Land Systems, Joint Systems, Defence Services and Aerospace, Civil, and Air Systems.
Located with its primary customer, the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) at Garden Island in Sydney Harbour, Thales Australia’s Naval business group offers its commercial and defence customers leading edge capabilities as a prime contractor, systems integrator and in-service support provider.
By constructing six HUON class minehunters on time and on budget in one of Australia’s most successful defence projects, Thales Australia (then ADI Limited) proved its capabilities as a prime contractor for major naval programs. Thales Australia has since designed, constructed and delivered six LPA amphibious watercraft to improve the Australia Defence Force’s amphibious capabilities and is the prime contractor and design authority to upgrade the RAN’s Oliver Hazard Perry class FFG guided missile frigates to become the most capable of their class world wide.
Thales Australia’s FFG upgrade project is the most complex naval systems integration task ever undertaken in Australia. At its core is the Thales Australia (then ADI Limited) developed Australian Distributed Architecture Combat System (ADACS), which delivers a versatile naval combat system solution with future growth capacity. Thales Australia has also delivered superior mine warfare capability by integrating its Australian Minesweeping System (AMAS) into eight navies.
Thales Australia is providing integrated material support solutions for the RAN’s HUON class minehunters, FFG guided missile frigates, ANZAC class frigates and LPA amphibious watercraft with services including: program, configuration, maintenance, inventory and supply-chain management along with training and integrated logistics support.Underpinning its naval capabilities is Thales Australia’s naval design engineering team – regarded as one of Australia’s largest and most experienced.
Thales Australia Underwater Systems is now a business line of Thales Australia’s Naval business. Underwater Systems has over the last thirty-five years developed the most extensive capability in the design, manufacture, integration, test and support of advanced sonar systems in Australia. Underwater Systems specialises in anti-submarine and mine warfare sonar systems and has provided the sonar systems to the COLLINS submarine, the ANZAC frigates, the FFG guided missile frigates, the HUON Mine Hunter Coastal ships. Underwater Systems is Australia’s only manufacturer of piezoelectric ceramics, and produces hull mount sonars, towed arrays, variable depth sonars, sonobuoys, acoustic performance prediction systems, and is a member of the DJIMINDI program to supply the MU90/IMPACT lightweight torpedo to the ADF.
