austal-independenceAustal is the world leader in the design and construction of customised, high performance, aluminium commercial and defence vessels. With proven designs, Austal has found favour with both Australian and international defence clients. More than 60 of Austal’s customs, police and patrol boats are currently in service, confirming strong interest in Austal’s affordable, high speed naval solutions.

Austal’s lightweight aluminium construction technology allows for lower engine powering and economical operating characteristics, delivering efficient and reliable service and substantially reduced operating costs. Recently completed fleets for the Armed Forces of Malta and the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago have reinforced Austal’s place among the world’s elite patrol boat suppliers.

Austal recently delivered its first 127-metre US Navy Littoral Combat Ship (LCS), built at Austal’s facility in Mobile, Alabama. The LCS is intended for operation in coastal (littoral) areas globally, and will become a significant part of the US Navy fleet in the future. They will be highly manoeuvrable and configurable to support mine detection / elimination, antisubmarine and surface warfare.

As Prime Contractor, Austal is currently designing and building the US Department of Defense’s next generation multi-use platform, the Joint High Speed Vessel (JHSV). The JHSV program calls for up to 10 vessels valued at a total of US$1.6 billion.

Similar to the Austal-built “WestPac Express” operated by the US Marines for the past seven years, the JHSV will be capable of transporting troops and their equipment, supporting humanitarian relief efforts, operating in shallow waters and reaching speeds in excess of 35 knots fully loaded. The vessels will be a joint-use platform operated by both the United States Army and Navy.
